Team Foundation Server 2017 Installation Guide

[UPDATED February 27, 2017 — There’s a new version of the guide and I’ve updated the links in this post to point to the new version.]

Well, you may have heard that Team Foundation Server 2017 (TFS2017) was released today.

If you’re interested in installing it, here’s my TFS2017 install guide.  It’s ~80 pages of step-by-step instructions with screenshot on how to set up Windows Server 2016, SQL Server 2016, and Team Foundation Server 2017.

Here’s that link again.

I have recently migrated the TFS from 2015 to 2017. The migration went successful. I am using VS 2015 Update 3. My name is listed in project collection administrator. I am unable to create team project using visual studio 2015 update 3. i am able to create through web without any issues.
I am getting the error like You cannot create Team project with version of visual studio. Please help

Hey Sankara — I’m not 100% sure what’s going on here. My *guess* is that you can’t create a new TFS2017 team project from VS2015. If you don’t need SharePoint or SSRS for your team projects, you can go to the Team Project Collection admin page in a browser (click on the gear icon) and create a team project from there. Otherwise, you’ll probably need to install VS2017 and create a team project from there.

    Hi Ben,

Appreciate your efforts and providing users with installation guide. It is a blessing for new users.

We are upgrading our TFS from 2013 to 2018. However, I would like to know whether we need to upgrade VS also to 2017. Does TFS 2018 is compatible with VS 2013? Also, can you provide a guide to back TFS database from 2013 and restore to 2018? TFS Backup and Restore guide will be more helpful to new users like me.

    Appreciate your support.

    Keep up doing good work.

    Hi Ben,
Thank you for your TFS 2017 installation document.
I am doing the same things except that I have a third-party application server and another tier data.
I first installed the tier data with the Analysis and Reporting Services options + the SqlServerTFS’s instance. Everything is operational as I wish.
I already had to do this type of installation, but with TFS 2015 and SQL Server 2012. We install sql before TFS, specifying only the Analysis Service and Reporting service – Native.
Do you have information about TFS 2017 and SQL Server 2016, the SQL instance should be declared again on the server tier application, what should be done.
    thank you in advance
